The loft is an all steel construction with mesh floors/ The droppings, feathers and all dust drop below to an enclosed dry pit which is raked out at the end of the year. As there is no risk of cross infection, Jim uses fowls to continually rake over the dry litter and ensure no excess feed attracts rodents.
There is little chance of any weather driving in; if in fact it did the entire matter would be removed, the base would be limed and the process would start again.
The loft is designed on an open air principal and the cold winter creates an atmosphere where the birds feathers protect them from the cold, and in turn a lush set of feathers is evident on every bird.
Health is paramount. Jim’s watchful eye soon picks up any problem and that bird is isolated until recovered. It’s back to basics and the birds love the loft, the fresh air and sunlight and just thrive.
